Sijilmasa (now in ruins) was the chief trading center and the capital of the kingdom. Since the Middle Ages, the region has been noted for its dates and leather. It was the original seat of the ruling dynasty of Morocco, which came to power in the late 17th century. Most of the inhabitants still live in the 18th century ksar, a maze of dark, almost troglodyte passages. Rissani, capital of the Tafilalet, remains an important commercial center in the area, with its huge souq, especially on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Everything can be found there, though gold, ivory and slaves have disappeared, and the salt, which was previously imported from Mali, has lost its value. After visiting the market, we will get chance to taste the region’s famous pizza (called Madfouna) before driving to Todra gorges, which is among the most dramatic sights in all of Morocco .
